Assignment 4 - Poster

This is my 4th Assignment.

The feedback given was that the 2 different font types used in the header make it confusing as to which is the main msg that I would like to send out. However, I felt that focus is with AGE ACTIVELY. And the different fonts differentiate the two lines, yet when read tgt, creates a new meaning.

Another feedback was that I could try to make it seem like the 2 of them are making a video call. However I felt that it might be too much for the older folks. They might feel that video calls are too complicated for them.

For this design, I felt that this design would catch them in a simple manner.I still prefer my initial design =).

Because I'm in Voices, and we have auditions, and I happen to be part of the audition-ing party, thus I gt this idea.

I guess the idea's pretty straightforward. I had 8 photos, but feedback given was that I could make do with 6. Thus I decided to take out 5 and 7.

The idea is that someone saw the flyer, went to auditions, gt thru, and join the big family. =)

Assignment 2 - Abstraction

My design is an abstraction of a recording studio. Most of the time, people are unsure if you are doing a recording or just doing mixing/mastering. Having a sign that tells ppl that you're recording would be a nice way to tell them to keep quiet. =)

However, I had to redo this because the idea of the abstraction has to do with some building/infrastructure in Singapore. Thus, I decided to do on Haw Par Villa.

Assignment 1 - Final Product

For Love, my microphone and keyboard was left untouched. I felt that these 2 designs are stable. I gave colour tho them to make the items they stand for stand out.

For J, I kept my bass design. However, the challenge was to make it more of a 'J' than a 'D'. After a few attempts, I decided to keep the body as plain as possible because if I were to make it more realistic, the designs in the middle would make it seem more 'D'. Also, I decided to have my name on the body. On top of that, to make the bass more realistic, I gave the strings the real thickness relative to each other.

For the E, I decided to scrap the wire idea and to come up with an amplifier. The gray area are where the sound comes out from, the white part forms the body, and the red the buttons on it. I feel that this is a realistic and makes more sense than the wire.















The Hate. I preserved my egg with a beetle coming out, and the cockroach. I researched on insect eggs, and although this seems like a bird's egg, insect eggs are rather similar in look. Except that they are softer.

The cockroach forming the 'L' is rather live-like. I was drawing it while referring to a Wiki-cockroach.=)

I changed my 'J' to an insecticide. I hope that it is obvious. Given the context, I believe you would be able to tell that it is an insecticide... Right? I added some insecticide liquid on the ground beside the canister to accentuate the 'J'. At first I was afraid that the liquid on the ground would seem too random, however, I added a few droplets of the same coloured liquid dripping from the mouth of the canister. This shows that the canister is leaking thus leaving the liquid on the ground.

I also preserved the worm, but made it into an Earth-worm.

Assignment 1 - Drafts

This would be the very first draft for "love". Basically, I just love music. From my previous post, I'm currently in Voices during Mando-pop. I play the keys with them.

I got the ideas for the drawings based on scenes of a 'live'-performance.

The first idea came as one that is very uncreative to me as many music lovers (I've done some 'research' online =) ) like myself made up the alphabets in their names using musical instruments. Mine is as follows:
J- Bass
O- Microphone
E - Wire connected to a socket
L - Keys.
I'm satisfied with the 'O' and 'L'. But I was afraid that the 'J' looks like a 'D' and the 'E' doesnt stand out.

The second idea, in my opinion, does not seem musical to me. But there IS indeed such a scene during a 'live' performance. It seems more of a love towards the technical aspect of a concert.

L - Right speaker
For this draft, I was concerned about the power socket on the 'J'. It seems to be there, for the sake of being there. And the sound waves of my monitor for 'E'. Although it does make sense, it is rather weak.

The third idea would be a band performance. I like my own creativity in this =D. However, all the alphabets are very vague and in my languange, terrigible to let others know of my name.
J - Person with a keytar
O - Person on a cajon
E - Person with a microphone
L - Person on a mixer.
On top of the terrigible design, this setup is very rare in real life. This is because the keytar is a Midi Controller producing electric sounds.. it is used to add on to a main instrument, which is absent in the design.

The last idea is also another idea i like. A real live unplugged setup.

I was thinking between this and the first design to improve on.. But Dr Julian said that this design is not as straight forward as my first, and the wire is insignificant to 'E'. Thus, I eventually chose the first design to improve on.


Next on would be the 'Hates'. Hates is very hard for myself.. Because the only thing I really cannot stand would be terrigible food, and ______ that I cannot say because it is a very very very sensitive topic.

I had to think quite a bit before coming up with the following. They're not so much as HATE but more of irritating.

The first one refers to bugs in general. Actually, I chose 'insects' at first. However, I realised that I have problems doing the E, thus bugs. I wun want the characteristics of Insects to be discussed on this blog. =)
J - Some insect with a long tongue
O - Some insect emergin from an egg
E - Some worm
L - Some insect
I realised after completing this design that there are lots of 'some'. I would have to be specific in the drawings. Especially for 'J', where the tongue makes no sense. Hmm. maybe I should call it proboscis. 'O' and 'E' makes sense. 'L' is also SOME insect.. It's bad.

Second design are ALL cockroaches.
J - Cockroach laying eggs
O - Egg sac
E - Many baby cockroaches
L - Giant cockroach
I feel that ther whole thing is too cockroach-y. It's bad. First thing.. the parent doesnt lay eggs like that. It just lays an egg sac like in 'O'. The egg sac would contain many eggs. Secondly, cockroaches are solitary creatures. This design shows a clear lack of creativity

I was stuck by the thirs design and decided to do a change in Hate.. to sleepless nights.

L - Window with moon and moonlight
I have to say that the design is ok, but does not showcase my name at all. It is similar to my third design in Like. Every alphabet doesnt really make sense. Especially the 'E'.

The last design is a terrigble one. It shows a very packed busstop.
J - Bus under the bus stop
O - People queuing
E - More people queuing
L - Even more people.
Yes, this idea is taken from NUS bus stops during peak periods. Everyone wants to board the bus..sajidhasudhsldhslahdksahdlk!!!!! The time I take to wait for a bus to get to Buona Vista MRT station during peak periods is the same as the time I take to drive home. And I live at Pasir Ris! Anyway, ranting aside.. It's a bad design.

I eventually decided on the first design to improve on. There is much to be done..

My First Post

It has taken some time for my first post. I have been rather busy with auditions and welcome tea for my cca, NUS CAC Voices. It is really very tiring to sit down and listen to people auditioning for about 3 hours for 4 days! Not only that, the after action reviews on them are equally tiring.

Ok, some stuff about myself. I'm Joel and currently year 2 in SoC majoring in Computing (Comms and Media). And I'm very interested in music =)

Anyway, back to work for NM2208. I came up with the following
- My name is Joel, and I love Music


- My name is Joel, and I hate bugs/sleepless nights/long bus queues.

A few choices for "hates" cuz I cant think of much to draw for cockroaches then.
